What is Pahalgam attack?

On April 22, 2025, the serene Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir became the site of a devastating terrorist attack, marking one of the deadliest assaults on civilians in India since the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

The 22 April attack by a group of five militants-style uniform emerged from the dense pine forests surrounding Baisaran Valley, a popular tourist destination accessible only saw by foot or pony. 26 people killed, with survivors saying the militants were singling out Hindu men. 20 were injured.

Who were targeted?

Target on Indian civilian’s. They targeted a group of tourists, primarily non-Muslim men, demanding they recite Islamic verses to determine their faith. Those unable to comply, including Hindus, Christians, and even a local Muslim guide named Adil Hussain who attempted to intervene, were brutally executed.

Immediate Aftermath and Humanitarian Response.

In the chaos that ensued, local residents displayed remarkable courage. Members of the local pony riders’ association used ponies and makeshift stretchers to evacuate the wounded, while others provided shelter and first aid to survivors. Despite these heroic efforts, the incident led to a significant decline in tourism, with over 80% of bookings canceled, leaving towns like Pahalgam deserted.

Impact after attack

As India downgraded diplomatic ties with Pakistan and announced a raft of measures, including suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960, on Wednesday, Pakistan on Thursday said any move to divert water meant for it under the pact will be considered an “Act of War”.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the accused in the terror attack will be pursued “to the ends of the earth” and promised to “identify, track and punish every terrorist and their backers”.

Political and Diplomatic Repercussions

Operation sindoor was launched by India launched missile and drone strikes targeting suspected militant camps in Pakistan, resulting in further casualties. Pakistan condemned these strikes as acts of war, leading to a severe escalation in diplomatic tensions, including the suspension of airspace and the expulsion of diplomats. International actors, including Iran and the United Nations, have called for restraint and offered to mediate between the two nuclear-armed neighbours to prevent further escalation.
