What is Operation Sindoor?

This operation sindoor was launched by India after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam in which 25 Indians and 1 nepali citizen were murdered.  The operation was precise, targeted only terror camps and avoided Pakistani military sites, India actions were not about revenge but were about defense and keeping its citizen safe. How was operation sindoor executed?

Operation sindoor was executed on 7 may, India executed hitting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir from where terrorist attacks against India have been planned and directed. Altogether 9 sites have been targeted, the action have been focused, measured and non- escalatory in nature. Five of the nine sites that India hit, they said, were in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The remaining four were in Punjab – in Bahawalpur, Muridke, Shakar Garh and a village near Sialkot.

Execution: The operation was led jointly by the Indian Army, Indian Air Force (IAF), and other strategic units.

India claims it hit “terrorist infrastructure”, targeting organizations including the LeT and Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM), an armed group based in Pakistan which claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing in February 2019, which killed 40 Indian paramilitary soldiers in Pulwama in Indian-administered Kashmir.

Who is lead operation sindoor?

Operation Sindoor was led by Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who outlined details of the tri-services operation to the media. India carried out 24 missile strikes to avenge the Pahalgam terror attack.

Airspace and Travel: Both countries imposed airspace restrictions. India closed 25 airports, affecting over 300 flights, while Pakistan shut down its airspace for 48 hours. International airlines rerouted or suspended flights over the region

Precision Weapon Systems Possibly Used in Operation Sindoor
 

1. HAMMER (Highly Agile and Manoeuvrable Munition Extended Range)

It is an Air-to-ground precision-guided weapon system for Rafale. It ranges up to 70 km.

Key Features are resistance to jamming, suitable for low-altitude launches over difficult terrain.

• SCALP (Storm Shadow)

It is a Long-range stealth cruise missile by MBDA. It ranges approximately 450 km. Its capabilities include night/all-weather operations, accurate bunker-penetrating strikes using INS, GPS, and terrain referencing.

• METEOR

It is beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM). Its specialty is a large ‘No Escape Zone’, high performance in electronic-warfare scenarios. It uses solid-fuel ramjet motor technology, which maintains high speed till impact.

• BRAHMOS

 It is a supersonic cruise missile developed by DRDO-Russia JV. Its speed is up to Mach 3. Its range was recently extended for land and ship variants. The missile is capable of carrying a conventional warhead with a payload ranging from 200 to 300 kilograms. Key features of the missile include a ‘Fire and Forget’ capability, a terrain-hugging terminal phase for enhanced stealth and accuracy, and high versatility across diverse operational scenarios.

• Loitering Munitions (Suicide Drones)

They are equipped with explosive warheads. They are used for real-time surveillance and autonomous precision strikes.
