Supreme court declares 2nd and 4th Saturday as working again from July 14

The Supreme Court of India has officially reinstated the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of every month as working days, effective July 14, 2025, under the new Supreme Court (Amendment) Rules, 2025

Key updates

✅ Effective date

The change takes effect from July 14, 2025, per a notification issued on June 14, 2025

✅ What It Means

  1. Offices of the Supreme Court—including the Registry—will now function on all Saturdays, including the 2nd and 4th of each month.
  2. Registry hours on Saturdays: 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with non-urgent filings accepted only until 12 noon

✅Revised Weekday Working Hours ⌛

  1. Monday–Friday: 10 AM–5 PM.
  2. No new matters accepted after 4:30 PM, unless urgent

Purpose

The amendments aim to reduce the case backlog and enhance judicial efficiency by increasing court availability and administrative capacity

Implications

For Lawyers:

  1. More flexibility in filing documents and managing court-related work.
  2. An opportunity to fast-track cases and processes that are otherwise delayed due to short work weeks.

For Litigants:

  1. Improved accessibility to court services, especially for urgent and time-sensitive filings.
  2. Likely to shorten waiting periods for certain case proceedings.

For Court Employees:

  1. Adjusted work schedules and added responsibilities on Saturdays.
  2. However, this might be balanced with alternate leave structures or staggered working models in the future.

Reactions from the Legal Community

The decision has been met with mixed reactions:

1.Supporters believe this is a progressive step that reflects the urgency in addressing the huge case backlog.

2. Some critics argue that increasing workdays may not solve the root causes unless it’s backed by reforms in case management, digitization, and courtroom efficiency.
